Rich and Poor

Rich and Poor

When you have only 10 cents in your pocket, a single candy means a lot to you. It feels sweet inside your mouth, and it feels good inside your heart too. But it isn't the same when you have 100 dollars in your pocket.

When you saved 2000 dollars for six months in order to buy yourself the first smartphone, you feel like you're in the air. You feel so happy, and you toy with all the applications and personalizations available. The battery ran out in a day, but your heart was bigger than any other day. It isn't the same when you have your fifth phone, although those are more advance and fantastic.

When you hold your girlfriend's hand for the first time, she can feel your anxious hand sweating. You think you can feel her tender skin, her fingers between yours, and your heart is shouting hyperglycemia. It isn't the same when you are holding your third girlfriend's hand.

It isn't just about the wealth you have. It is just that the element of freshness, surprise, interesting, and all that's wonderful aren't there anymore, or are reduced to negligible. It is always the best for the first time, because you pay so much effort in making it happen. You work your heart and sweat out for your first salary, you twist your wits to figure out how to date the girl you fall for. You read books, consult professionals, and even your grandmother on how to welcome the first baby. Everything is so blissful.

But things start to fade. No, the objects are still the same. But the feelings are not there. It's just not there. Everything has become a mere tool to achieve your objective. Not a goal, but a tool. You buy a smartphone because you want the function, and you are just satisfied when the functions are those what you want. This is what the marketers are trying to sell: The feeling. When people buy because of emotional attachment, they will appreciate the product/service more.

There are also rallies that claimed we are ungrateful and only appreciate things when we lose them. I don't think people just plainly forget to appreciate. I think it's because there are too many things in life that we can't possibly carrying everything with us throughout our life. There are things which we want in a certain time. There are things we still love but we keep it somewhere, so that one day we can go back to the memory.

Don't be sad because of what's left. Be happy for the first time for everything.
