AAC: The New World for MP3 Lovers

AAC: The New World for MP3 Lovers

Most people love Mp3 because of its availability and compatibility to most audio devices. It is small in size, and handy since most media players support this file format.

However, FLAC lovers may not be liking Mp3 as FLAC, ALAC and APE are lossless music file formats. Lossless means it is close to the CDs without sacrificing sound quality. Mp3, on the other hand, are lossy formats, which is subjected to compression and degradation in sound quality. Some people argued that most would have a hard time differentiating between FLAC and Mp3, and due to that reasoning, Mp3 is preferred because it is space-friendly.

And then it came AAC (Advanced Audio Codec). Mp3, as we know in a very general knowledge, has a bit rate ceiling capped at 320kbps. However, AAC offers up to 400kbps, and what's more, it's on Variable Bit Rate mode. Actually, the advent of AAC is to replace Mp3 as AAC offers a better sound quality in similar bit rates.

Speaking of Media support, AAC is gaining compatibility lately as most devices can play it. Apple fans are no stranger to AAC, as it is the main audio format for Apple products. Besides, conventional portable players and smartphones today are able to play it too. I have personally tried it on my hTC sensation XE default music player with an AAC-400 VBR song, and it handles pretty well!

Time for a change to AAC!
